Shopify app
Collections drift out of order. Sortby keeps them sorted.
Sortby reorders the products in a collection using rules you set on metafields, inventory, prices and dates. It re-sorts nightly and whenever you ask.
Coming soon to the Shopify App Store.

Sorted by weight, descending — grams and kilos compared as one scale.
Shopify gives you a fixed list of sort orders. Sortby gives you rules.
Metafields
Read as values, not text
Numbers, dates, ratings and measurements sort by what they mean. 500 g falls below 1 kg, because Sortby converts units before comparing.
Automatic
Re-sorted every night
Metafields refresh at 3:00 UTC and every collection with rules is reordered at 4:00. New products land in the right place without anyone opening the admin.
Priority
Rules stack in order
Boost rules run before sort rules, and a rule higher in the list outranks the ones below it. Drag a row to change what wins.
The rule engine
Two kinds of rule, applied in the order you set
Boost rules float matching products to the top or push them to the bottom. Sort rules order everything that is left. Boosts are applied first, and within each list a rule higher up outranks the ones below it.
Sortby sets the collection to manual order for good, then writes the computed order back to Shopify. Products with no value for a rule always sort last, whichever direction you picked.

Sort rules
What a collection can be ordered by
Stack as many as you need. Each one is ascending or descending, and later rules break ties left by earlier ones.
- Product metafields
- Numbers, decimals, ratings, booleans, dates, money and every Shopify measurement type — weight, volume, dimension, power, speed and more. Units are normalised before comparing.
- Total inventory
- Move what you actually have in stock to the front, and let sold-out products fall away.
- Price
- Ordered on the lowest variant price, matching how Shopify's own price sort behaves.
- Title, vendor, product type
- Plain alphabetical ordering on any of the three text fields.
- Created, updated and published dates
- Newest first for new arrivals, oldest first to clear through older stock.
Boost rules
What gets lifted above the rest
Every boost sends matching products to the top or to the bottom, before any sort rule is considered.
- Pin
- List specific values of title, vendor, product type or a text metafield, in the exact order you want them to appear.
- Tags
- Lift products carrying one or more tags. Products matching more of the listed tags rank higher.
- Compare
- A numeric test — greater than, less than, equal — on any numeric field or metafield, with a choice of how missing values behave.
- Text pattern
- Match title, vendor or product type against a pattern, for anything a simple field value cannot express.
- On sale
- Boost products whose compare-at price is higher than their price.
- Has images
- Keep products without a featured image out of the first rows.
Set up once, then leave it alone
- 1
Install and import
Sortby reads your product catalogue once, through Shopify's bulk API, with a live progress bar. It asks for product access only — nothing else.
- 2
Pick collections and write rules
Choose a collection, stack your boost and sort rules, and drag the rows until the priority is right. A preview shows the resulting order before you commit.
- 3
Sortby keeps it in order
Metafields refresh at 3:00 UTC and every collection with rules is reordered at 4:00. Product changes arrive through webhooks in between, and 'Sort now' runs it on demand.
Stop reordering collections by hand
Free on up to 500 products and 3 collections, with every rule type included — metafields and all.
